Here is the tutorial I promised you – much sooner than expected! I have named the block Scrambled and I really like this block.  I am still cutting pieces to make my quilt bigger and I sew when I have a few minutes here and there. Hopefully I’ll have a finish to share soon.

This block is pretty versatile and you can do so many different designs by placing the blocks in a variety of ways. I’m looking forward to seeing how you use your scraps in this block!

Finished size: 12″x 12″.  The large block is made up of four 6″ (finished) quadrants. These quadrants can be used on their own if a 12″ block is not desired.

Materials Needed (For one 6″ quadrant)

  • (1) 3-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle
  • (1) 3-1/2″ square
  • (1) 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ rectangle
  • (2) 2-1/2″ squares
  • (2) 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ rectangles

Step One                                                                                                                                     Sew a 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ rectangle to a 2-1/2″ square. Make two. Press seams to the darkest fabric.

Step Two                                                                                                                                     Sew the 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ rectangle to the long side of one of the units made in Step One. Press seam to the rectangle.

Step Three                                                                                                                                  Sew the 3-1/2″ square to the rectangle side of the unit made in Step Two. Press seam to darkest fabric.

Step Four                                                                                                                                   Sew the 3-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle to the second unit made in Step One. Make sure the small rectangle is on the left side of the square when you sew on the large piece. Press seam to the rectangle.

Step Five                                                                                                                                       Sew the two sections together to make the 6-1/2″ quadrant. Trim & square if necessary.

If making a large block, lay out four quadrants in a design you like. Because this is a scrappy block, you can place the four sections in any way that looks good to you.

Sew the top two sections together, and the bottom two sections together. Then sew the top and bottom rows together to make the large block.

Ta-da! Now you’re ready to move on to the next block! Have fun busting those scraps. 🙂

To help with all the scrap cutting I plan on doing, I finally purchased an Accuquilt fabric cutter. Yay! I have been wanting one for a really long time but was hesitant. I have a similar cutter for scrapbooking and absolutely love it, so I’m not sure why I put off buying one for so long.

Accuquilt is currently having a sale on all their cutters and most of their dies. This is the first time I have personally seen them on sale, so I jumped on their site and ordered the Go! Fabric Cutter. I can hardly wait for it to get here!! If you want your own to help in cutting all those scraps, now is the time to order. You can click the banner below and find the cutter or dies that is on your wish list. Happy Shopping! 🙂
