Today I’m excited to share with you a finished top I’ve been working on for a while. There may have been a few pics of some of the blocks in progress on Instagram, but I haven’t shared anything here. The quilt is the first pattern release by the husband and wife team Tish of Tish N Wonderland and Dave of The Quilt Engineer.
The pattern is called Star Blossom, and provides instructions to make the quilt in four sizes. I chose to test the Queen size version and make it in shades of blues with a pop of gold for my mother-in-law.
Let me tell you, this thing is so big! My top measures 98 x 124. I couldn’t find a way to get a full size picture without help, so I draped the top over the handrail of the deck. You are seeing the bottom row – there are three more rows just like this.
The pattern is wonderfully written and easy to understand, with plenty of graphics to explain each step. Each block finishes at 24″, so I only had to make twelve for my large quilt.
I am working on the quilting now and suspect it might take me a little while. I’ve decided to do a good bit of ruler work, so we’ll see how it goes. I can say I’m extremely glad I am able to quilt this beautiful beast on a longarm! This is the second largest quilt I’ve ever made. I can’t wait until it’s quilted and I can get full size pictures of the completely finished quilt.
The Star Blossom pattern is available for instant PDF download in Tish’s Craftsy shop for the introductory price of $8.00 until June 11. After that, it will be the regular price of $10.
To celebrate their first pattern release, Tish and Dave have generously offered one of my readers a PDF copy so I’m having a giveaway! To enter, simply leave a comment. I’d love to know if you use rulers in your quilting and if so, which is your favorite. I’ll announce a winner here on Saturday, June 10.
Hop on over and pick up your own copy of Star Blossom. As always, if you purchase a copy and are the winner of the giveaway you’ll be refunded. It’s a win/win!

Have a great weekend and may your quilting blossom! (See what I did there? 😉 )
Very pretty! Love the blue and gold colors.
Lovely! It’s nice to see a pattern in big and small versions. I do not use rulers for quilting.
Oh it’s beautiful Beth! I’ve loved the sneak peeks on Instagram but seeing it here well, most of it lol is wonderful. I’m doing blue and yellow for my aunt’s quilt…too bad it’s using those 5 packs of charm squares from Craftsy or I’d be contemplating making Tish’s pattern.
Beautiful work–I love your color choices, too! I’m new to quilting and so far use my walking foot rather than fmq/rulers.
I do not use a ruler when sewing but should really look into getting a good quality one. There are so many things to collect for sewing and quilting.
Love the colors you chose for your version of Star Blossom. I haven’t ventured into the world of rulers with my quilting. I love straight-line quilting with my domestic machine. Would love to make a quilt for our king bed. Think I would need to find a long arm somewhere to quilt a quilt that big : )
Your version of this quilt is really beautiful. Have yet to use rulers but I’m open to it.
I am in love with this pattern and can’t wait to see your version finished. Your fabric choices are perfect and I love the border fabric. It works perfectly with the rest of the quilt. I know this quilt will sing once you’ve added your quilting magic to it. I don’t use rulers but am thinking about trying it on my domestic. Rina
Stunning large quilt! I haven’t yet used rulers but hope to learn soon!
That is a great quilt but — oh boy it is BIG! Way bigger than will fit on my queen bed but I sure like the pattern. Yes, I do use rulers on my long arm. The one I use the most is a rectangle — about 3 or 4″ by about 8 or 10″. It fits my hand nicely and is easy to scoot along while I’m stitching in the ditch on blocks. I’ve also got one that has 4 different arcs on it — each a different size. Sorry I can’t tell you the brand names on either of these as I’m not at home. Thanks to you and Tish and Dave for the opportunity to win a free PDF download of this quilt.
I love this pattern and the colors you chose! I have done some ruler work on my domestic machine, mostly using a straight ruler. I have several curved rulers but haven’t taken the time to play with them yet.
I’ve never used rulers. On occasion I am tempted, but I think it’s better for me to practice FMQ walking foot. .Thanks for the giveaway.
I love this quilt!! I don’t use rulers in quilting as I don’t have a ruler foot for my Juki. It’s on my with list, though.
This is such a beautiful quilt, love everything about it. I have not used rulers in quilting, but would very much like to try, a few that I have seen, seem to be a little expensive.
I really love the quilt and I am looking forward to seeing the finished results. Yes, I use rulers and my favorite is my Handi Gadgets Versa Tool.
This quilt pattern is gorgeous and I really like the colours you have chosen. I hope the quilting goes well – it looks quite a challenge. I haven’t used quilting rulers – just masking tape 😉
Love the colorway you chosen and from the snippet of quilting I’ve seen on IG, it’s going to be fabulous!
Hi Beth, I do use rulers and my favorites are from Quilter’s Apothecary. They have an angled handle which give a lot of control and stability to holding with one hand. It will be a wonderful quilt when you have worked your magic on it.
I haven’t used rulers but I’m just a beginner and usually do meanders. I am just starting to practice other free Motion quilting designs. I have watched some demonstrations on the ruler techniques and it looks like fun. Good luck with it.
Very nice job on your Star Blossom quilt. Love your choice of colors too. I have several rulers but just haven’t used them for fear I will ruin a customer’s quilt. When I retire I hope to practice, practice, practice to learn how to use them!
Love this quilt. The fabrics you used are really pretty together. I do use rulers. I have a few that are my favorites: June Taylor strip ruler 12 x18; 12 1/2 inch ruler and my 6 1/5 inch ruler. I have many rulers but these three are my favorites. Thanks for the chance to win this quilt pattern.
Wow your quilt is beautiful. Love their first pattern. I’ve never used rulers while quilting. I’ve seen blog posts and videos about it. I’ll have to give it a try
I love your quilt! Great big quilts are so satisfying, but so much work. Use a sit down Gammill Charm for my quilting, so the bigger they are, the more of a workout it is for me. I only recently purchased my first ruler for quilting, just a straight stitch in the ditch ruler, but I’m looking forward to getting a curved one to do some curved cross-hatching.. Thank you for sharing your quilt, and for the opportunity to win a free pattern.
I love the pattern. Your quilt is beautiful. I don’t use rulers when I Quilt. I am mostly an in the ditch or straight line quilter.
Great design and I love your colorway you used. I can’t wait to see it quilted.
My fav ruler to use on my longarm is “Judy Madsen’s Favorite”–I highly recommend it!!! Super cute quilt!!!
I don’t use rulers very often but I am partial to my straight ruler by Linda Taylor.
I love the colourway you chose. I can’t wait to see the quilting, have fun.
The quilt is beautiful. A nice pattern. I have never used quilt rulers.
Oh, my goodness, it’s gorgeous! I can’t wait to see it upon completion. I’ve only just started using rulers in my work, having just completed a tutorial by Living Water Quilter. I have three..a straight ruler, a curved ruler, both from Accents in Design, and a new 4-N-1 ruler from Natalia Bonner. I loved it and can’t wait to incorporate what I’ve learned into a larger quilt. I FMQ on a domestic.
I am learning to use a straight line ruler. It isn’t easy.
Beautiful quilt you made. The pattern is so pretty. I would love to win it. Rulers, well, no I don’t use them. However, probably should, lol.
This pattern is gorgeous and I’d love to win!
As for rulers, only use them for the straight edges
I love the blues with the pop of gold. Wonderful, just the colors that make me think of mom. I don’t do my own quilting, but I have two friends that use the Westalee rulers and like them a lot.
The quilt looks beautiful. I love the colors!!! You always do such a nice job 🙂
What a lovely quilt. Your color choices are beautiful. I haven’t used a ruler . . . yet.
Beautiful quilt. Lovely colors. I haven’t had the opportunity to use rulers yet. angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom
Your quilt is beautiful! and huge!! I quilt on a domestic machine and have dabbled with rulers a little bit–just the straight one for now–not brave enough to try the curved ones yet!
I love this quilt!! The colors you used were wonderful.
what a gorgeous quilt, stunning colors also. please post a picture when you have it all quilted.
i have yet to use rulers, but would like to try soon.
Oh, I definitely use rulers, and I have several Olfa brand. I’d love to get some more specific rulers, like half-square, and template type rulers. I will just keep adding to my stash.
Your quilt is beautiful. Love the bright and cheery colors. I do not use rulers when quilting because of a bad experience when I was new to long arm sewing. I love to see others work with them and watch a ton of videos but cannot get started with them again.
Beautiful, I love blue and yellow quilts, super job and can’t wait to see how you quilt it. Yes I do use rulers, I love doing custom even though it takes a lot of time. As to which rulers, I have a selection-Renae Haddidin’s amazing arcs(smallest ones) which I probably use the most. Love Deloa Jones castle ruler, nested circles from Quilters Rule. More than I can’t think of, LOL.
I use rulers, but I also use masking tape
Oh, that is such a beautiful quilt! It is very summery with the blues and the yellows, some of my favorite colors. And wow, it’s huge. Thank goodness you have your Freddie now, right? Enjoy every minute of quilting her!
Thanks for the introduction to Tish and Dave’s quilt. At 24 inches, the block would make a great mini quilt. I do not quilt with rulers. Although I’ve watched several demonstrations for a small sewing machine. Thanks for the chance in the giveaway! clara-chandler@att.net
Love the color choice you made! This is so pretty! I’ve never made a block that was 24″ big. Wow!
I don’t use rulers for machine quilting yet because I am still learning to straight line quilt on my domestic machine. Maybe when I get that under control I’ll move on to rulers! 🙂
Hi Beth,
What a lovely quilt. I am sure your mother-in-law is going to love. The colors are just perfect. I do not use rulers – yet. I am working my way up to using them. I will be happy to read about your experience with them. ~smile~
Roseanne
What a great pattern! Love it in those colors too, great gift for your mother in law!
This is bright and airy!!! The blues and yellow/gold are perfect. I don’t use rulers, I’m still trying to convince myself to try fmq, ??
Love it! The colors are perfect and I know it will really come to life once your quilting is complete. I have always thought that a quilt comes to life with the quilting. I don’t use rulers but and thinking about it. Rina
Love the colors you’ve chosen. The pattern is fantastic and it’s so great that Dave is supportive of Tish’s love of quilting. No, I haven’t tried rulers yet. I don’t own any for quilting since I think they are thicker than the ones used for rotary cutting. I need to learn more about them.

Love this pattern! Your quilt is fantastic. I quilt on my domestic machine and have just started using Westalee rulers
I just love the colors you chose for this! It is absolutely gorgeous! It really shows off the pattern well.
What a beautiful pattern! I think I could make fewer blocks for a lap size, but it’s nice that the project gets completed with not too many blocks.
Love using big blocks for a queen or king quilt! Hate quilting a king or queen quilt on my standard machine
This is a gorgeous quilt and yes, very big! I do use rulers and right now the straight line and clam shell are my favorite. I like that I can do patterns without marking on my domestic machine!
So pretty, the colors are awesome. I don’t use rulers, I’m more of a meander person.
This is wonderful! Love the colors in it.
I haven’t done any ruler work to this point in my quilting. But it is something that I’d love to do at some point.
Wow this is big and beautiful. I am sure it will be enjoyed once you have it completed.
Oh boy, Beth, this is gorgeous! I’ve been thinking about this quilt ever since I read Tish’s post. I might need to get this one. I need a new quilt for my bed . . .
Thanks for this post and giveaway, and thanks to Tish and Dave. I looked at all the quilts, and they are really pretty, but the blues of yours appeals to me so much. I have not YET used a ruler, but mostly because I haven’ graduated from the walking foot. I do like the idea of the Westalee rulers, though.
